May the Test Prep Begin!
The Test Prep Workshop will provide test preparation for the SAT Reasoning Test, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), and the ACT. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a co-sponsor of the PSAT, recognizes students who achieve high scores in their junior year. PSAT scores give juniors a chance to qualify for the NMSC’s scholarship programs. Colleges also use PSAT scores to begin recruiting potential students. The ACT and the SAT Reasoning Test are college entrance examinations used in the college admission process. Both of these tests contain an essay portion. Although open to all 9th-12th graders, this intensive 5-day course has proven to be most helpful to those incoming sophomores and juniors who are unfamiliar with the different formats, sections, and expectations of the various tests. Each participant receives full instruction in the variations between the tests, repeated practice in all formats, skill review and refinement, and one-on-one counseling regarding performance and recommendations. Students will leave the workshop with increased confidence about the appropriate test(s) for their particular learning style and skills to refine during the school year. (also, test-specific workshops are offered throughout the year just prior to each test administration.)

As a veteran English teacher of twenty-two years, Ms. Johnson-Smith brings her knowledge of English reading and writing basics to the classroom to help students learn and review many of the lessons covered in a typical college-preparatory English classroom and tested on the college entrance exams. Joining her are veterans Rusty Haynes, College Counselor; Jennifer Gaskin, science; and Jennifer Hedden, math.
The Market and Social Entrepreneurship
Some people start a business to make a lot of money; some do it to change the world. Starting and running a business offers extraordinary rewards, challenges and, just maybe, opportunities to create a better world. This course will have students explore the world of entrepreneurship by developing the basics of a business plan, using teamwork and creativity to tackle problems, and meeting with entrepreneurs to hear about their greatest challenges and mistakes. While students learn the essential issues in providing a service or good, they will also explore ways entrepreneurs have implemented best practices in social entrepreneurship and made a positive difference locally and globally. The course begins with examining how the free market provides and innovates, compensates risk, and how individuals have been rewarded for meeting a societal need.
