Athletic Wrap-up 2008-09

Upper School Girls’ Volleyball

The girls’ volleyball team enjoyed many firsts again this year. They finished the regular season 19 and 0, were League Champions, District Champions, runner-up at Regionals and runner-up at State. They finished the season with an overall record of 28 and 2. Their second place finish at State was the highest finish ever for a Kodiak team. This was the 6th winning season in a row for the volleyball team. All-conference honors were earned by Breanna C. and Tracee H. Honorable Mention All-conference honors were earned by Hannah J., Caroline S., and Karly Y. All-area honors were earned by Breanna C., Tracee H., and Karly Y. All-State honors were earned by Breanna C. and Tracee H. The JV girls’ volleyball team posted their best season playing and winning many close matches.

Middle School Girls’ Volleyball

Both the “A” and “B” teams enjoyed winning seasons this year. The highlight of the season was the end of season BFL tournament where the girls finished third and played great volleyball. With many returning “A” team players and our number of players growing, the outlook for Kodiak volleyball is bright again for next year.

Upper School boys’ and Girls’ Cross-Country

This year proved to be the best in many for the varsity cross-country team. Fielded full teams for both boys and girls and qualified a runner in both teams for State. Caroline F. qualified for the girls and Blake R. qualified for the boys. Both also earned all-conference honors.

Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ Cross-Country

This season proved to be the best in recent history for Middle School cross-country. Numerous runners placed in the top ten at multiple meets and we had our greatest number of participants since we began cross-country. The girls’ team placed in the top five on several occasions and finished second at the Tri-Peaks League meet. Greta S. won every meet she ran including the TPL championship. The team continues to grow and with many young runners returning, next year looks very exciting.

Upper School Boys’ Soccer

The varsity boys for the second year in a row qualified for the State tourney with an 8 and 7 record and a second place finish in the 3A South Region. Jared J. broke the school scoring record with 18 goals and Delovell E., with 10 assists continues to build his assist record. All-conference honors went to Jared J., Delovell E., Ethan G., and Peter T. Ben S. and Santino M. were honorable mention all-conference. Delovell E. was named second tem All-State and Jared J. was Honorable Mention All-State. With several starters returning next season, the outlook is bright.

Middle School Boys’ Soccer

The boys enjoyed another excellent season with 10 wins 2 losses and 2 ties. They competed against the top middle school programs in Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo. The program continues to grow and experience success.

Upper School Boys’ Tennis

The tennis team completed their 6th winning regular season in a row with 6 wins and 4 losses in dual matches. Led by #1 singles’ player Justin K., and juniors Josh S. and Nate W., the Kodiaks finished third at Regionals for the second year running. Justin K. finished second at Regionals qualifying for State and earned All-Area recognition. With many returning players, next season may be even better.

Upper School Boys’ Golf

Competing against much larger schools has always been a challenge in golf at CSS, but sophomore Ian C. made the most of it this year winning in a sudden death play-off to qualify for State. With many young players coming up and Ian C. leading the way, the program should grow stronger.

Upper School Boys’ Basketball

The boys followed up last year with an even more incredible year this year as they won the first State Championship in school history. They finished 19 and 0 in the regular season winning their second league championship in a row. Following the regular season, they finished second at Districts, won the Regional Championship and then State. Their overall record was 26 wins and 1 loss. Leading the team in scoring and rebounding was Delovell E. Delovell also earned First team All-Conference, First team All-Area, First Team All-State, and was named the Denver Post 2A Mr. Basketball in Colorado. Andre B. was first team All-conference and second team All-State. Chris D. was first team All-Conference. Santino M was Honorable Mention All-conference and Ethan G. earned Honorable Mention All- State and All Conference honors. This was the sixth winning season in a row for the Kodiaks the guys are looking for another excellent season next year.

Upper School Girls’ Basketball

The girls considered this a rebuilding year after finishing under 500 (8-12) for the first time in six years. The good news for the girls, however, is that all 13 players return again next season. The girls are all playing hard in the off-season and are looking forward to a great 2009-10 season. Leading scorer Karly Y., eared first team All-Conference and second team Gazette All-Area. Andi A. earned Honorable Mention All-Conference.

Middle School Boys’ Basketball

Both the “A” team and “B” team finished above 500 for the season. The “A” team took third place in the BFL Championship tournament. There were many great overtime wins and close games as the boys grew in game and team strategy. Each of the team members learned valuable skills and lessons throughout the season.

Middle School Girls’ Basketball

The girls enjoyed a much improved season as they grew in skills and understanding of the game. A positive attitude was maintained throughout the season with the girls winning eight games and playing many close games. With only two 8th graders on the team, the girls look to be even better next year.

Upper School Boys’ Lacrosse

The varsity lacrosse team experienced the most successful season in CSS history with 11 wins and 3 losses. They came within one win of qualifying for the state play-offs. Led by a group of 11 seniors the Kodiaks set records in goals scored and goals given up. Leading scorer, Justin K. led a great group who earned All-Conference Honors. Those honored first team were Skylar W., Mike V., Dan L., and Blake R. Honorable Mention were Ethan G. and Ian P.

Middle School Boys’ Lacrosse

Lacrosse fielded two teams this season with players from 4th-8th grade. Playng larger and more experienced teams, CSS was able to be competitive in all games earning wins over club teams from Cheyenne Mt., Pueblo, Rangers and Patriots. Many first time players picked up the game quickly and became significant contributors by the end of the season.

Upper School Girls’ Soccer

With an increase in numbers this year, the Kodiaks were able to play a JV schedule in addition to our varsity schedule. CSS has a great group of 9th and 10th graders and with another group of new 9th graders, we should be highly competitive next year. Sara K. earned first team All-Conference honors.

Middle School Girls’ Soccer

With 28 girls joining the team, the team enjoyed a highly successful season. Their overall record of 11 wins 2 losses and 3 ties shows promising signs for the Middle and Upper School teams in the years to come, especially with 20 players returning to the Middle School team next year. By season’s end, the Kodiaks outscored their opponents 48-25.

Upper School Girls’ Tennis

The varsity girls enjoyed their first winning regular season in six years, finishing the season at 6 wins and 4 losses in dual matches. Laura J. signed a tennis scholarship at Fort Hayes State and led the team with 10 and 0 record in dual matches. With a great group of young players, the tennis team should improve over this year’s season.

5th/6th Girls’ Volleyball, Girls’ Basketball and Boys’ Basketball

CSS continues to compete in the Cheyenne Mt. Elementary League in these sports. Our students gain invaluable experience as we field three teams in each sport, with each player getting much playing time.
