Parents Association Committees for 2010-2011

New Family Program

Chair: Heather Lowe
Laura Nelson

Committee members pair new families in the Middle and Upper Schools with ambassador families over the summer. Children's School families are served by an Ambassador Family program administered by the Head of Children's School and the Children's School Parent Advisory Team. Ambassador families contact and meet with their new families to provide a familiar face and point of contact. They review school activities and information sources, traditions, and volunteer opportunities. They also introduce the new family to other families at the school and answer questions as needed throughout the year. Chair organizes summer BBQ with Admissions Office and trains host families.

Hospitality and Outreach - Helping Hands

Chair: Ruth Watts

At times throughout the year, CSS families are stricken by family tragedies and major life dilemmas. The Hospitality and Outreach committee seeks to provide a helping hand and a caring heart during those moments. To protect the dignity of each family's personal matters, sometimes these actions are done on behalf of the CSS community and this committee in a quiet manner. In the event a larger community response is needed, this committee will coordinate efforts such as meals and donations.

Carnival

Chair: Krista Peel
Donna Cagle, Heather Lowe

The chair organizes more than 100 volunteers to staff booths for the carnival, held yearly in the fall. Publicity, supervision of revenue counting and distribution, ordering of prizes and tokens, renting of tables and booths and coordination of food booths fall under the responsibility of this committee. The PAB underwrites a portion of the carnival's expenses and turns proceeds over to the classes to put in their treasuries. The event is intended to be a community builder and provides an opportunity for students and their families to enjoy a fun afternoon, socialize, and raise money for each class to spend as they see fit. Middle and Upper School classes need to raise funds to pay for trips, the prom (juniors) and a gift to the school (seniors).

Election

Chairs: Lisa Cullity
Donna Cagle

This committee publicizes the election of Parents Association Board members and solicits candidates. All candidates should be given a consistent introduction to PAB activities and responsibilities, should receive copies of the committee list and by-laws, be invited to attend a meeting. The chair oversees the election of new members by organizing the counting of ballots, writing the article announcing the results, and informing the candidates of election results.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation

Chair: Jennifer Richter
Linda Jackson

This committee plans several events and gifts for faculty and staff members, to let them know that the parent community appreciates their hard work. In past years, the events have taken the form of a lunch/snack buffet provided during parent/teacher conferences. In addition, a small gift is presented toward the end of the school year.

Fun Run

Chair: Stephanie Mason
Linda Jackson, Kate Murphy

The chair provides structure for the entire event including arranging a contest in the Children's and Middle Schools to create a design for and order t-shirts, and to offset the cost by seeking advertising from school parents who can promote their businesses on the shirts. The chair also develops a registration form for the race, seeks volunteers, coordinates with the carnival committee, orders ribbons, and sets the race course. Work on this committee commences with the start of the school year.

Garage Sale

Chair: Donna Taylor
Cheyenne Gapinski, Laura Nelson

This spring fund/friend-raiser involves the coordination of many volunteers, rental or donation of a P.O.D. and tables, publicity, unloading donated items from P.O.D., setting up the week prior to the sale and day of the sale and pick-up of unsold items.

Potluck Dinners

Chair: Kate Murphy

This is one of our school’s most important friend raising venues. The Parents Association is very appreciative of the families that offer to host a class potluck in their home. The host family has only to provide the venue and service ware. The primary goals of the potlucks are to reconnect, welcome and build recognition between families whether they are returning or new to CSS. If the class host family would like to have the pot luck at a venue outside their home, please check with the PAB first.

Great American Opportunities

Chair: Cheyenne Gapinski
Linda Jackson

The PAB switched to this company in 2010 when Sally Foster changed to a gift card only program. Great American Opportunities offers an extensive catalog of gift items as well as the ever popular cookie dough and something new -- jewelry. The chair recruits volunteers to help distribute catalogs, enter orders, and distribute merchandise on arrival.

Albertson Cards

Chair: Ruth Khan

Families can link their Albertsons grocery cards to The Colorado Springs School and a portion of your grocery purchases support the school.
