Roles and Responsibilities:
CSS is seeking an innovative and creative educator with a broad skill set in teaching English Language Arts. The specific classes will be determined based on experience and interest and could include World Literature, American Literature, European Literature, AP Language and Composition, or AP Literature and Composition. This teacher will also participate in Experiential Centered Seminars, which require extended periods with students, ranging from a single overnight to several days.
The position’s preferred qualifications:
Bachelor's or advanced degree (preferred) in a related field
Experience teaching courses from grades 9-12
Innovative mindset with strong skills in communication, collaboration, project-based learning, and technology
Experience in teaching English Language Learners (ELL), particularly international students
Independent school experience
The Upper School ELA Teacher will:
Teach Language Arts from an introductory level to an advanced level
Serve as an advisor for a group of 8-10 students, guiding in academic, extracurricular, social, and personal areas, and serve as the school’s key liaison to parents for this group of students
Support a differentiated and globally integrated curriculum that includes student engagement through project-based learning, hands-on activities, experimentation and iteration, and other active approaches to learning
Support experiential education in the Upper School by leading an Experienced Centered Seminar, which may include overnights with students
Attend all faculty meetings, department meetings, and other meetings as required
Be able to collaborate effectively and facilitate the development of a positive class culture that supports learning and personal growth
Complete grades/comments, advisor letters, and other academic communication promptly and professionally
Appreciate and support varying learning abilities through robust lesson planning and rigorous assessment
Provide regular and valuable student feedback and maintain assessment records
Promote the development of character, community, and curiosity in all dealings with students, including enforcing school rules
Know the developmental and academic abilities of one’s students and communicate with students and families regularly
Adhere to the standards described in the Employee Handbook
Perform various student supervisory duties
Possess an innate ability to engage and inspire students through innovation and creativity
Work collaboratively with department, colleagues, and families
Possess an innovative mindset with a focus on student-centered learning and technology
Be attentive to details/conditions as they pertain to student whereabouts and safety
Enjoy building relationships with students and their families
Be involved in the school community at large and participate in and contribute to a Community of Belonging in formal or informal ways
